The Truth about Fevers

Most of us were taught that a rising temperature means something is wrong—that it needs to be suppressed, brought down, and fixed as quickly as possible. But a fever isn’t a malfunction. And it certainly isn't dangerous. It isn’t the body failing. It’s the body working.

A fever is one of the most intelligent responses of the immune system, especially in children. It’s part of how the body learns, adapts, and builds life long resilience and immunity. When the body raises its temperature, it’s doing something remarkably precise: increasing white blood cell activity, improving immune communication, and strengthening long-term immune memory. In other words, a fever is not the enemy. It’s a sign that the body is actively doing its job.

I’ve never taken my children’s temperatures nor have I ever given them a fever reducer. The only time I ever owned a thermometer was during a severe case of mastitis (a benign but painful bacterial infection of the breast) after my second baby. I was surprised at how high my fever felt and, out of curiosity, asked my husband to buy a thermometer. By the time he returned, my fever had already broke—and it still read 106°. We were both impressed at the innate wisdom of my body and never questioned once my ability to heal on my own.

We’ve been conditioned to believe that high fevers are inherently dangerous. But the body is far wiser than we give it credit for. Febrile seizures, while frightening to look at, are typically manageable and rarely result in long-term harm. The fever itself is the innate wisdom at work, the inherent protective design we were all created with.

The goal isn’t to silence the body. The goal is to support it.

Building A Child's Immune System

There are predictable windows in childhood when illness shows up more frequently. These are not signs of weakness — they are signs of immune development.

Ages 6 months–2 years
As maternal antibodies fade, the immune system begins learning on its own. Fevers during this stage help “introduce” the immune system to the world.

Ages 3–5 years
Social exposure increases. The immune system is actively building memory. Repeated short illnesses are common — and purposeful.

Ages 6–8 years
This is a refinement phase. Children who were allowed to mount full immune responses earlier often experience fewer and milder illnesses here.  (IE not given fever reducers of any kind from Tylenol to homeopathy) A chiropractic adjustment is key during any illness and if a fever breaks from the adjustment, it's because we boosted the immune system with the adjustment and the fever is now able to come down. Chiropractic is amazing for kids of all ages including new borns.

Each fever is a lesson.
Each illness is training.

Suppressing that process interrupts the body’s ability to learn.

Why Suppressing Fevers Can Work Against the Body

When we automatically suppress a fever at the first sign of discomfort, we unintentionally interrupt this natural process. Short-circuiting a fever can shorten the immune system’s training window, limit the development of long-term immune memory, and increase the likelihood that the same illness will return again and again. Over time, the body will begin to rely more heavily on external intervention instead of strengthening its own ability to respond. Let that fever RIDE, mamas!

How does Dr. Heather comfort the febrile child? Skin to skin, nursing, lot's of holding, hugs and kisses and telling the child that their body is expressing their INNATE. Hydration is always key and I love anything from fresh coconut water out of the coconut (not a plastic bottle sitting on store shelves) and good clean true spring water loaded with our healing shilajit minerals.

A fever that is supported—rather than silenced—gives the immune system the space it needs to do exactly what it was designed to do. With rest, hydration, nourishment, and sleep, the body can move through illness in a way that builds strength on the other side. This approach honors the body’s innate wisdom and trusts in its capacity to heal, adapt, and grow more capable over time.

A fever isn’t something to fight.
It’s something to support.

A Wild Mamas Perspective

We don’t believe in fighting the body. We believe in supporting it.

The body is not confused or broken when "illness" appears. In fact, we see this experience as an expression of HEALTH, not illness! It's a complete body detox to have a fever and its accompanying symptoms from runny nose to cough. None of it should be suppressed. Your immune system is responding with precision and purpose. Especially in children, sickness is not a sign of failure—it is part of how the immune system learns, adapts, and grows more capable over time.

A fever is one of the body’s most powerful teachers. Through a fever, the immune system practices recognizing threats, coordinating defenses, and building memory. Each supported illness strengthens this internal intelligence, helping the body respond more effectively in the future.

When we meet sickness with trust instead of fear—when we nourish rather than suppress—we give the body the space it needs to complete this essential work. We offer rest, hydration, real nourishment, and calm. We allow healing to unfold in the way it was designed to. STOP fearing this intentionally designed process and START giving real nutrients that their little bodies need to express full health. What are these REAL nutrients? Keep reading below for the three most healing and nourishing foods on earth that I freeze dried and put into a capsule for your child and mine!

Over time, this approach builds something far more valuable than temporary symptom relief. It builds resilient children with immune systems that know how to stand on their own.

This is ancestral health.
This is immune intelligence.
This is the Wild Mamas way.

P.S. You can support a fever through our supplements.

When little bodies are working hard, they need real nutrition to fuel the process.

Itchies & Sneezies This powerful blend of five wild bison organs feed the immune system at its roots, helping children shift how their bodies respond to allergens and their environment instead of living in a constant state of overreaction. Rich in DAO (Diamine Oxidase, the enzyme that breaks down excess histamine), this formula supports conditions tied to atopic disease — including eczema, asthma, allergies, and chronic immune sensitivity — by restoring balance, tolerance, and resilience from the inside out.

Wild Child was created as a true daily foundation — whole-food vitamins and minerals to support immune strength, growth, and resilience without sugar, synthetics, or lab-made junk. LOADED with all the immune boosting fat soluble vitamins A, D, E & K! Just the way nature intended it to be.

Brain Child provides deep nourishment for the nervous system AND immune system — omega-3s, vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients that support immune health, focus, calm, and neurological development. A truly complete multivitamin and more from the sea. ZERO microplastics and UNDETECTABLE levels of mercury. Doesn't get healthier or safer than that!
